Zhushan Fm base reconstruction

Zhushan Fm

Period:
Cretaceous

Age Interval:
Early Cretaceous, (21)

Province:
Heilongjiang

Type Locality and Naming

E. Heilongjiang – Wandashan. Uppermost formation of Longwangzhang Gr. Named after Zhushan in Heilongjiang Province by Heilongjiang Research Team of Mesozoic Coal-bearing Stratigraphy, 1986, Study of Longzhaogou Group and Its Correlation with the Jixi Group of Eastern Heilongjiang Province, Harbin: Heilongjiang Science and Technology Press.

NOTE: There is (was?) also a "Zhushan" Formation of Paleogene age in Yunnan Province.

Lithology and Thickness

"Consists mainly of nonmarine coal-bearing beds 6 to 8) with marine-littoral intercalations. They are sandstone, tuff, tuffaceous breccia, coal seams and mudstone. In the basal part, conglomerate and gravel-bearing sandstone beds are recognizable. … The total thickness is about 930 m"

Lithology Pattern:
Coal

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

Conformably overlies the YunshanCret Fm.

Upper contact

"It is conformably overlain by the Cretaceous Dongshan Fm of the Huashan Gr, or partly unconformably overlain by the Tertiary formations."

Fossils

"The lower part of the formation yields abundant plant fossils, freshwater bivalves and gastropods. From the upper part, fossil plants, pollen and spores and marine-littoral bivalves are commonly found." In the upper part, three littoral beds are intercalated yielding marine bivalves Sinopsammobia ovalis and S. longzhaogouensis.

Age

Both extend from the top of the underlying Aptian-lower Albian YunshanCret Fm, implying that the Zhushan Formation is lower-middle Albian.
